NYT > iPhone: Apple CEO Visits Foxconn's iPhone Plant in China

NYT > iPhone

Updated: Jan. 25, 2012

In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone, which instantly became one of the most talked-about consumer products ever. Thousands of customers lined up to be the first to buy the phones, which featured computing and Wi-Fi capabilities, along with a crisp, computer-like display on an innovative touch screen. Rivals, including Google, rushed phones with similar features onto the market.

In October 2011, the company unveiled an eagerly awaited new version of the device, the iPhone 4S, that included a "virtual assistant," Siri, that recognized voice commands by users to schedule appointments, dictate text messages and conduct Web searches.

Although the new phone was virtually indistinguishable on the outside from its predecessor, the iPhone 4, it was packed with better technical innards, including a more advanced camera. The phone also included a more powerful chip known as the A5, the same microprocessor that acts as the brains inside the iPad.

Though many Apple fans expressed disappointment about the lack of a design change, consumers reacted very differently. Apple said it sold more than four million iPhone 4S's during the device's first weekend on sale.

In January 2012, after a blockbuster fourth quarter, Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said the iPhone 4S accounted for the majority of iPhone sales. This statement took on added significance considering that at the time, the iPhone 3GS was free with a two-year contract, and the iPhone 4 cost $100. Even in a down economy and with a free iPhone in its portfolio, Apple still managed to sell the expensive, newer 4S to most of its customers.

Yet the free and reduced-price iPhones were still important to the company's business. Tero Kuittinen, a senior analyst at MGI Research, said the free iPhone 3GS gave Apple the opportunity to expand aggressively into markets where smartphones were not as popular yet, like China and Africa.

Jan Dawson, an analyst with Ovum, said not to underestimate the power of the free iPhone 3GS and the cheaper iPhone 4. "You'd better believe the other iPhones are selling, too," he said. "They're suddenly competitive with the lower-end smartphones that you used to get if you couldn't afford an iPhone."

The iPhone4s runs on two kinds of cellphone networks, GSM and CDMA, allowing its operation worldwide. Prices start at $199 for a model with 16 gigabytes of storage. The new phone is available on the AT&T, Verizon and Sprint networks.

In a Race With Android

Apple's strategy helped narrow the lead that had been gained by Android phones, powered by Google's operating system. Nielsen, the audience measurement firm, reported that 61.6 percent of United States smartphone consumers surveyed in October 2011 said they had gotten an Android phone within the previous three months, while only 25.1 percent got an iPhone.

By December 2011, though, Android's lead among people who had recently acquired a smartphone had narrowed to 46.9 percent, while 44.5 percent of consumers said they had bought an iPhone, Nielsen said. About 57 percent of iPhone owners in December said they got the new iPhone 4S, while the rest, 43 percent, got older iPhones.

Legal Dispute

Soon after the iPhone 4S was introduced, Samsung Electronics said that it would seek to block its sale in France and Italy, asserting that the phone violated its patents. In seeking a court order against its rival in the two large European markets, Samsung indicated a more aggressive stance in its expanding patent battle with Apple.

Samsung said that it planned to file for preliminary injunctions in other countries after further review. The two companies are locked in about 20 legal disputes over patents in nine countries, including Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States.

The fight began when Apple sued Samsung in April 2011 in the United States, asserting that the Samsung Galaxy lineup of smartphones and tablet devices "slavishly" copied the design, user interface and packaging of the iPhone and iPad. Samsung responded with its own lawsuits accusing Apple of violating its intellectual property.

An Issue of Control

Apple likes to maintain tight control over what programs can appear on the iPhone — a task that became a little bit harder in July 2010, when the Library of Congress, which has the power to define exceptions to an important copyright law, said that it was legal to bypass a phone's controls on what software it will run to get "lawfully obtained" programs to work.

The issue has been a topic of debate between Apple, which says it has the right to control the software on its devices, and technically adept users who want to customize their phones as they see fit.

Apple has also said that altering the phones encouraged the pirating of applications, exposed iPhones to security risks and taxed the company's customer support staff. But iPhone hobbyists say they simply want to have free range to use certain features and programs on their phones that Apple has limited or failed to offer.

Can Apple win in an intensely competitive market against rivals that are openly licensing their software to scores of companies? It faces that challenge not only in phones, but also in the market for tablet computers, where the iPad is about to take on a similar set of rivals.

The stakes are huge, as the mobile computing market could prove to be larger than the PC market ever was.

That leaves little room for error at Apple. The company must continue to create hit products, as a single misstep could give Android and other rivals an opportunity to make inroads and steal market share.

Wednesday Recap: Apple in 51 Percent of Households, AT&T Loves Lumia 900
Mar 28th 2012, 22:31

Nokia Lumia 900We may be Apple fans, but we can still appreciate when competitors bring their best game to the table. Microsoft and Nokia are betting the farm with the new AT&T-branded Lumia 900, which the carrier seems to think will have a bigger launch than even the iPhone. We're hoping that's a misquote, but we won't have long to wait -- the Lumia 900 will hits stores on April 8. Since you're sitting at home plotting which AT&T store will have the shortest lines on that day, why not catch up on the day's news for Wednesday, March 28, 2012…?

Love Apple? You're Definitely Not Alone

Chances are, you probably know at least one other person with an Apple Inc. product in their house -- and likely more than that. According to CNBC's All-America Economic Survey, more than 55 million homes have at least one iPhone, iPod or Mac, with another one in 10 ready to drink Cupertino's Flavor Aid in the next year. That amounts to nearly 51 percent of U.S. households, and homes with Apple products have an average of three devices. "It's a fantastic business model — the more of our products you own, the more likely you are to buy more," says Jay Campbell, vice president of Hart Research Associates, who helped conduct the CNBC survey. "Planned obsolescence has always been a part of the technology industries sales model, but Apple has taken it to a whole new level." The poll of 836 Americans was conducted via landline and cellphone from March 19 through 22 -- and presumably a lot of those cell phones who answered the call were of the iPhone variety.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 Beta Hits Half a Million Downloads

Photoshop fans have been eating up the new CS6 public beta released on Adobe Labs last week, and today the Photoshop.com Blog has announced the software has been downloaded a whopping half a million times during that period. "It's not often that we provide an advance preview of the next release of Photoshop and we're grateful for all the support and buzz the beta has received," the blog notes. "We're glad you're as excited as we are to see all of YOUR requests come to life." And it doesn't end with the downloads -- Photoshop CS6 Beta became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter as soon as it was announced, and the curious among you have already viewed the accompanying videos half a million times as well. Seems fair to say that CS6 is well on its way to success when it launches later this year, and the company is already teasing a vector pattern creation tool for Illustrator CS6, which will launch alongside the new Photoshop.

AT&T: Nokia Lumia 900 Launch Will Be Bigger Than iPhone

Don't get us wrong: Nokia's new Lumia 900 looks like a pretty sweet piece of hardware, and if we had to be trapped on a desert island with a mobile device running something other than iOS, we could very well be content with Windows Phone. That said, AT&T is taking a pretty big risk, spouting off at the mouth about just how substantial the Lumia 900 launch will be. "At all levels, this is a notch above anything we've ever done," extorts AT&T device head Jeff Bradley in an interview with CNET, noting that includes the iPhone launches over the last five years. Does that mean we'll see throngs of hipsters lined up at AT&T retail stores en masse on Sunday, April 8? Sure, the $99.99 price with two-year agreement is certainly enticing, and the carrier is planning a barrage of television advertising over the next six to eight weeks to support the launch. "Before you walk in to the store, you know this is our hero phone," Bradley continues, noting that the Lumia 900 is considered a flagship product for the carrier -- and will no doubt be even more important to Microsoft and Nokia, who are hinging their collective futures on launches such as this one.

Hasbro v. Asus Lawsuit Reveals Weak Preorders for Transformer Prime

TechCrunch is reporting on an interesting side note from the recent legal action that toy maker Hasbro attempted to serve up on tablet maker Asus over the use of the name "Transformer Prime" for their latest Android 4.0 release. While a Federal judge has ruled that the name does not infringe on Hasbro's Transformers property, the most interesting tidbit comes from court filings that expose just how many of the tablets eager fans scarfed up during preorders. If you're thinking six figures, guess again: Asus only racked up 2,000 preorders for the Transformer Prime, which is without a doubt one of the premiere Android tablets on the market today. Of course, that wasn't the end of the story, with another 80,000 units pushed out to retail, but those numbers do pale in comparison to Apple's new iPad, which moved three million units over the first weekend alone. Adding insult to injury, the case will still be going to trial, since the judge in question "simply rejected Hasbro's request to have sales of the Transformer Prime device halted." Better luck next time, Asus...

Asian Research Group Says Apple HDTV "A 2013 Event"

The general consensus among analysts is that Apple will release its fabled HDTV later this year -- after all, sooner is always better, isn't it? But it turns out there's at least one research group who is breaking away from the pack and looking ahead to next year instead. "We continue to view Apple TV hardware as a 2013 event," a note from Asian research group CLSA reveals in a report published today by Business Insider. "Most clients agree that a TV is coming; the critical question becomes how the video providers fit into the equation and how Apple's offering would/could differ from current TVs beyond iOS/iCloud." CLSA spouts off a whole lot of reasons why they think 2013 is the year of the true Apple TV and it all seems to make sense -- but doggone it, we want to believe in 2012. Call us a bunch of Mulders, but we're still hoping our annual viewing of A Christmas Story is beamed to a slick new Apple set this year.

iPhone: How to Keep Your iOS Device in Sync without iTunes

iPhone
How to Keep Your iOS Device in Sync without iTunes
Mar 28th 2012, 20:25

iTunes was the original all-access music application, but since the introduction of iOS devices, it's morphed into a hodgepodge of apps, music, movies, application data, and other iOS-device data storage. If this ever-growing mixture of services is a bit too much for you to handle, then why not consider another method to get data onto your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad?

With iOS 5, Apple finally cut the cord, allowing users to set up their iOS devices without the use of iTunes. We'll use this functionality, along with some additional apps and services, to finally say, "good riddance" to iTunes.

What You'll Need

>> iOS 5.0 or higher
>> Free Google or iCloud account
>> GoodReader for iPhone ($4.99)
>> GoodReader for iPad ($4.99)

Applications

Unless you have a jailbroken device (and use Cydia for your app purchases), you will still need to get your applications from the iTunes App Store. With iOS 5, you can easily purchase and download your applications over the air on a cell or Wi-Fi connection. Downloading purchases over a cell connection requires the app to be under 50MBs; however, you can download any application over Wi-Fi.

You're probably already familiar with application purchases from the mobile App Store, but did you know that you can also restore previous purchases directly from your device? It's true.

To restore previous purchases, navigate to App Store > Updates > Purchased. From this section, you can choose to show all purchased applications, or just the ones not currently installed on your device. To download a previous purchase, tap on the small iCloud icon, and enter your iTunes account credentials. Your application will begin downloading to your home screen.

Files and other Data

There are many ways to get files and other data onto your device through third party applications. We'll show you two ways: through email and GoodReader OTA file transfer.

Email

Emailing yourself a file is one of the simplest ways to get a file into iOS for viewing in QuickLook in the mail app, or opening and manipulating the file in any numerous 3rd party application. iOS can automatically view the following documents through Quick Look in the Mail app:

- iWork documents
- Microsoft Office documents (Office '97 and newer)
- RTF (Rich Text Format) document
- PDF files
- Images
- Text files conforming to .text (or .txt) format
- CSV (Comma-separated value) files

In the email, attachments will be displayed in-line at the bottom of the message. Tap on any of attachments to have them displayed in Quick Look (if the file type is supported).

In the Quick Look preview, you can scroll through the document, viewing the contents of the file.

To open the file in another application, tap on the Share button in the upper, right-hand corner of this window, and then tap "Open In..." from the sheet that is displayed. In this new sheet, you will be able to select the application to open the file in for further viewing or manipulation.

GoodReader

If you need to open unsupported files in iOS (such as ZIP files), then you should take a look at a $4.99 application called Good Reader. Worth its weight in gold, this application lets you open, compress/decompress, and otherwise manipulate files that you normally couldn't in iOS. Good Reader also doubles as a great PDF viewing application with annotation abilities.

Good Reader can open and manipulate the following file formats:

- Large PDF files
- Large text files
- MS Office (.doc, .ppt, .xls)
- HTML and Safari webarchives
- High-res images
- Audio and video files

Sure, you could email yourself a file and use the "Open In..." button to open the file inside Good Reader, but you can also transfer files directly to the Good Reader application OTA through your Wi-Fi network using your Mac.

To do this, open Good Reader and and select the "WiFi Transfer" icon in the toolbar. Good Reader will then create a small server on your device capable of receiving files from your Mac over your Wi-Fi network.

On your Mac, open your web browser and type the "IP-address" listed in Good Reader into the address field in your browser. In the resulting web page, click on your Documents folder, and then you will be presented with the files in that directory. You can transfer a file to your iOS device by clicking on the "Choose file" button and selecting a file on your Mac in the file browser. You can also create a directory by entering a name in the text field and clicking "Create Directory."

When you're done uploading files to your device, tap on the Stop button in Good Reader to close the Wi-Fi transfer connection. The uploaded files will be available in the application on your iOS device.

Music

iOS 5 also ushered in a new way to get music onto your different devices: iTunes Match. This $25/year matches the music that you have in your iTunes library, and then makes the tunes available on your various devices, available for download or streaming. You can follow our guide here to learn how to set up iTunes match.

Once you have enabled and matched your music on your Mac, you can easily turn on iTunes Match on your mobile device and begin listening to all of your matched and previously purchased tunes. Navigate to Settings > Music, and flip the switch labeled "iTunes Match" to the ON position. Next, flip the switch for "Use Cellular Data" and "Show All Music" to ensure that all of your music is shown in the Music app.

When you use to the Music app on your device, all of your songs and iTunes-purchased music videos will be available for your listening pleasure. Tap on the song title to begin streaming, or tap on the small iCloud icon to download the song directly onto your device for listening on a limited cellular data plan or offline listening.

Maybe iTunes isn't your preferred way to listen to music? No problem, there's also Pandora, Rdio, Spotify, and a host of other options for streaming tunes for free, or with a nominal fee per month for extra goodies.

Videos, Movies, and TV Shows

While you could use the iTunes Store to snag all of your movies and TV shows, this can become a bit costly over time, depending on the shows that you watch and if they offer a season pass for purchase.

Some alternatives for watching your favorite content are:

- ABC Player (for all of your ABC TV shows and specials)

- Hulu Plus (requires a subscription; lets you watch shows from most major networks, except CBS)

- Cartoon Network (for all of your cartoon-watching needs)

- Netflix (subscription required; lets you watch movies and TV shows)

If you have a home video that you would like to put on your iOS device for later viewing, then you can transfer it using the GoodReader application. Good Reader can display most common video and audio files right from the app.

Contacts and Calendars

Contacts and Calendars are another commonly synced item, however, you can also sync these items OTA using some free services: Google Contacts/Calendars and iCloud.

Google Contacts and Calendars

If you use Gmail and Google Calendars, then you'll want to use this method to get your contacts and calendars in sync across your various devices. To begin syncing your Google data, we need to head to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Exchange.

In the Email and Username fields, enter your gmail address, complete with the "@gmail.com" ending; and then enter your password and an optional description of the account. Tap next, and then enter "m.google.com" in the Server field that appears.

After verifying your account, you will be asked whether you wish to turn on certain services. Among these services is Contacts and Calendars. After ensuring these services are switched ON, tap on the Save button in the upper, right-hand corner to save the configuration.

iCloud

iCloud is a bit easier to configure for syncing. After you have signed in on your Mac (under System Preferences > iCloud) and checked the option to sync Contacts and Calendars, open Settings > iCloud on your iOS device.

After signing into your account, flip the switch to ON for Contacts, Calendars, and any of the other services you wish to enable.
