iPhone: Tuesday Recap: Instagram on Android, Amazon on PS3, Faster Tagging on Shazam

iPhone
Tuesday Recap: Instagram on Android, Amazon on PS3, Faster Tagging on Shazam
Apr 3rd 2012, 22:28

Instagram for AndroidThe heavens parted for Android users today, and Instagram was delivered unto them. The news seems to have stirred up hateful emotions for some of the Google faithful who shun fraternizing with the more than 30 million iOS users already sharing photos with the service, but you can't please everyone, right? Meanwhile, there are plenty of other tech-related stories for this fine day, so let's launch right into all the news for Tuesday, April 3, 2012.

Instagram Makes the Leap to Android

That loud cheering you heard earlier today was probably Android users whooping it up over the news that Instagram has finally arrived on Google's mobile platform. While the company is touting more than 30 million users from the iOS side of things, they're sure to have quite a few more now that the Play Store has it on their virtual shelves. Personally we've always preferred Path to Instagram, but most everyone we know swears by the latter, so what do we know? If you haven't downloaded it yet, hit the link to grab it from the Google Play Store right now.

Amazon Instant Video Now Available on PS3 -- But Where's the iPad App?

On any given weekend evening while taking a break from writing the very news recap you're reading each weekday, we can be found sprawled out on the couch enjoying streaming movie rentals from Amazon Instant Video. The e-tailer offers a different recent feature film for only 99 cents each Monday through Thursday, and a trio of $1.99 offerings for the weekend, so it's a great way to get caught up for cheap. While we already have a Roku box and LG Blu-ray player both capable of doing this, what's not to like about one more home theatre device being blessed with it? Today, Amazon Instant Video is finally available on the Sony PlayStation 3, where it joins the ranks of Netflix, Hulu Plus and Vudu for your hard-earned dollars, complete with more than 17,000 free movies and TV shows available with your Amazon Prime membership and another 120,000 paid titles available. While it might help us get a few more hours of use out of our PS3, what we'd really like is an Amazon Instant Video app for the iPad -- what do they expect us to do, own a Kindle Fire, too? (Oh yeah… we already do…)

Tag Your Music in One Second with Shazam Encore 5.0

When your app can already perform magic, what could possibly be left to add to it? In the case of Shazam Encore 5.0, the app is now better, stronger and faster than ever before. Released earlier today, the fifth version of the $5.99 Shazam Encore now features "lightning fast tagging and recognition" coupled with "instant listening on start-up." Blended together, these features mean that the app is now capable of recognizing a song in as little as one second, particularly when the start-up time of the app itself has actually been shaved by a full second to begin with. If you're not in such a big hurry to tag those tunes, the 5.0 update still brings a lot to the table, with editable tweets in iOS 5 or later and "smoother, more responsive navigation and scrolling" as well as "improved sync on LyricPlay." Last but not least, the Shazam Friends feed now works even faster than before. It's all waiting for you to update in the App Store right now, so don't waste a single second and grab it today.

Next iPhone Coming in June, Foxconn Recruiter Tells Japanese News Crew

We've reported on some crazy Apple rumors over the years, but this one takes the cake. MacRumors is reporting that a crew from TV Tokyo's World Business Satellite recently nabbed a quick interview with a Foxconn recruiter in Taiyuan, China, where the company is apparently hiring 18,000 new workers for a plant there. The kicker to the story? According to Macotakara, the recruiter claims these workers are being added to the 80,000 already there "to support production of the iPhone 5," which is "planned to launch in June." It seems unlikely that a recruiter would have any insider knowledge of Apple's release schedule, not to mention what the workers they hire will actually be assembling, but take it with a grain of salt as always -- the rumor mill has already predicted that Apple will return to their mid-year release schedule for this year's iPhone, so folks are looking for anything that might bear fruit from that scuttlebutt.

Read It Later Should Probably Be Called "Watch It Later"

Talk about irony: Popular reading app Read It Later is reporting on their blog that users love to save video to the service as well, something the company quietly added to its superpower list back in 2010. Saving videos are up 138 percent, with YouTube cited as Read It Later's most-saved domain, with an average length of nearly 30 minutes per video. Vimeo is a distant second at only six percent, with other streaming video providers making up the remaining two percent. Doesn't seem like Read It Later will be entertaining a name change anytime soon, but the good news is the service certainly won't be discouraging these rogue users, either -- promising to work hard by expanding support "for all the video sites you like to use."

iPhone: Why Doesn't the iPad Offer More than 64GB of Storage?

iPhone
Why Doesn't the iPad Offer More than 64GB of Storage?
Apr 3rd 2012, 21:37

Fact: There's no such thing as too much storage. The more memory that a device has, the happier its owner will be. There is however, such a thing as paying too much for extra storage, and that's why we've yet to see an iPad or an iPhone with a higher capacity than 64GB.

If you're building a mobile device like a smartphone, tablet or even a laptop, flash storage, also known as a solid-state drive (SSD) is the way to go. As they contain no moving parts, they're less likely to break down over time due to repetitive motion, and if the device they're baked into gets dropped, there's no risk of the kind of data loss that we associate with old school hard drives. Since there are no drive platters, there are no drive platters to damage. They're also wicked fast compared to traditional hard drives.

Unfortunately, solid-state drives are still prohibitively expensive. "But why?" you ask, in your best Dr. Zoidberg voice. "Isn't the same sort of flash memory technology in an SSD used in a USB stick and RAM memory?" The answer is: No.

SSDs are mostly constructed using NAND technology (an architecture introduced by Toshiba in 1989) as opposed to the DRAM tech that goes into putting together computer memory and USB memory sticks. NAND components preform at a higher level than their DRAM counterparts do and, accordingly, cost more. In order to increase the storage capacity of an SSD, manufacturers have to string a number of NAND modules together. Doing so is a delicate affair that requires a great deal of firmware and controller tweaking. That sort of thing takes research, and research takes -- you guessed it -- more money.

The fact that SSDs still haven't been widely adopted makes an impact on their cost as well. Since companies that make SSDs aren't as likely to sell as many of them as they are traditional hard drives, they're apt to build less of them. This scarcity drives the price of solid-state drives up, which in turn keeps manufacturers and consumers alike from buying as much of this hardware as they might if the price were lower. It's the circle of financial strife.

But, thanks to the success of products like the iPhone, iPad, and the MacBook Air, it's been proven that solid-state drive technology, when paired with the right hardware, can be a winner. Because of this, a number of big names in storage hardware, like Western Digital, Seagate, and Samsung, are all producing SSDs. With time, the competition between companies to provide the best SSD at the lowest cost to consumers will no doubt drive the price of the technology down in much the same way as it did with hard drives over the past ten years.

Until this happens, we don't think you'll see an increase in the storage capacity of any of Apple's iOS devices. The price of an iPad is already significantly higher than that of an Android tablet with similiar specifications. By providing an iPad with more physical storage space, Apple would be required to raise the price of their tablet to such an extent that it would be out of reach for most consumers, and therefore, not worth making from a financial standpoint.

In the meantime, there's always iCloud, iTunes Match and a wide variety of third party cloud computing solutions to make sure that your iOS device can access most of the content that you want, even when your puny 64GB of flash memory is full, right up to the rafters.

NYT > iPhone: The Top iPhone and iPad Apps on App Store

NYT > iPhone

Updated: Jan. 25, 2012

In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone, which instantly became one of the most talked-about consumer products ever. Thousands of customers lined up to be the first to buy the phones, which featured computing and Wi-Fi capabilities, along with a crisp, computer-like display on an innovative touch screen. Rivals, including Google, rushed phones with similar features onto the market.

In October 2011, the company unveiled an eagerly awaited new version of the device, the iPhone 4S, that included a "virtual assistant," Siri, that recognized voice commands by users to schedule appointments, dictate text messages and conduct Web searches.

Although the new phone was virtually indistinguishable on the outside from its predecessor, the iPhone 4, it was packed with better technical innards, including a more advanced camera. The phone also included a more powerful chip known as the A5, the same microprocessor that acts as the brains inside the iPad.

Though many Apple fans expressed disappointment about the lack of a design change, consumers reacted very differently. Apple said it sold more than four million iPhone 4S's during the device's first weekend on sale.

In January 2012, after a blockbuster fourth quarter, Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said the iPhone 4S accounted for the majority of iPhone sales. This statement took on added significance considering that at the time, the iPhone 3GS was free with a two-year contract, and the iPhone 4 cost $100. Even in a down economy and with a free iPhone in its portfolio, Apple still managed to sell the expensive, newer 4S to most of its customers.

Yet the free and reduced-price iPhones were still important to the company's business. Tero Kuittinen, a senior analyst at MGI Research, said the free iPhone 3GS gave Apple the opportunity to expand aggressively into markets where smartphones were not as popular yet, like China and Africa.

Jan Dawson, an analyst with Ovum, said not to underestimate the power of the free iPhone 3GS and the cheaper iPhone 4. "You'd better believe the other iPhones are selling, too," he said. "They're suddenly competitive with the lower-end smartphones that you used to get if you couldn't afford an iPhone."

The iPhone4s runs on two kinds of cellphone networks, GSM and CDMA, allowing its operation worldwide. Prices start at $199 for a model with 16 gigabytes of storage. The new phone is available on the AT&T, Verizon and Sprint networks.

In a Race With Android

Apple's strategy helped narrow the lead that had been gained by Android phones, powered by Google's operating system. Nielsen, the audience measurement firm, reported that 61.6 percent of United States smartphone consumers surveyed in October 2011 said they had gotten an Android phone within the previous three months, while only 25.1 percent got an iPhone.

By December 2011, though, Android's lead among people who had recently acquired a smartphone had narrowed to 46.9 percent, while 44.5 percent of consumers said they had bought an iPhone, Nielsen said. About 57 percent of iPhone owners in December said they got the new iPhone 4S, while the rest, 43 percent, got older iPhones.

Legal Dispute

Soon after the iPhone 4S was introduced, Samsung Electronics said that it would seek to block its sale in France and Italy, asserting that the phone violated its patents. In seeking a court order against its rival in the two large European markets, Samsung indicated a more aggressive stance in its expanding patent battle with Apple.

Samsung said that it planned to file for preliminary injunctions in other countries after further review. The two companies are locked in about 20 legal disputes over patents in nine countries, including Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States.

The fight began when Apple sued Samsung in April 2011 in the United States, asserting that the Samsung Galaxy lineup of smartphones and tablet devices "slavishly" copied the design, user interface and packaging of the iPhone and iPad. Samsung responded with its own lawsuits accusing Apple of violating its intellectual property.

An Issue of Control

Apple likes to maintain tight control over what programs can appear on the iPhone — a task that became a little bit harder in July 2010, when the Library of Congress, which has the power to define exceptions to an important copyright law, said that it was legal to bypass a phone's controls on what software it will run to get "lawfully obtained" programs to work.

The issue has been a topic of debate between Apple, which says it has the right to control the software on its devices, and technically adept users who want to customize their phones as they see fit.

Apple has also said that altering the phones encouraged the pirating of applications, exposed iPhones to security risks and taxed the company's customer support staff. But iPhone hobbyists say they simply want to have free range to use certain features and programs on their phones that Apple has limited or failed to offer.

Can Apple win in an intensely competitive market against rivals that are openly licensing their software to scores of companies? It faces that challenge not only in phones, but also in the market for tablet computers, where the iPad is about to take on a similar set of rivals.

The stakes are huge, as the mobile computing market could prove to be larger than the PC market ever was.

That leaves little room for error at Apple. The company must continue to create hit products, as a single misstep could give Android and other rivals an opportunity to make inroads and steal market share.
