Tuesday Recap: Read It Later is Now Pocket, Pocketpedia is Back in App Store
Apr 17th 2012, 22:06

Pocket appThere's a lot of pocket-themed news today as "read later" service Read It Later rebrands itself as simply Pocket, and Pedia software developer Bruji finally makes a long-awaited return to the App Store with Pocketpedia 3. No, these two "pockets" don't have anything to do with each other, but they're cool apps that we love, so suck it up and read on for the details in our Tuesday, April 17, 2012 edition.

Read It Later Rechristened Pocket, Now Free to All

"Read later" services are on the rise, but it seems as if they'll need to mix up their product offerings a bit to draw attention. Such is the case with Read It Later, the aptly named cross-platform service which today tossed aside its legacy and rebranded as Pocket. The service has eliminated their paid app for iOS and Android, making it free to all takers while adding "a cleaner, lighter reading and viewing experience." That's right, the move to Pocket has largely been motivated by the recent disclosure that many users were using Read It Later to save video content as much as websites for later reading, and the developers have responded accordingly. Existing Read It Later logins will continue to work just fine in Pocket, and the app features a slick new UI with the option to present stories in an eye-pleasing grid view in addition to the traditional list view. Existing users can step up to the Pocket app by checking for updates in the App Store; for everyone else, the 6.1MB download is available free of charge right now.

Verizon Lights Up 4G LTE for Two-Thirds of the U.S. on April 19

It seems nothing can stop Verizon Wireless from 4G LTE domination across the United States. The Big Red carrier today announced that they'll be lighting up an additional 27 new markets on April 19, and that's on top of 44 existing markets that will be getting expanded LTE service at the same time. That puts the number of 4G LTE cities at 230 this week, covering more than two-thirds of the U.S. population and absolutely smoking AT&T's current total, which stands at 32 at this writing. Verizon offers more than 20 4G LTE-enabled devices for its network, including the new iPad. Can an LTE iPhone be far behind? We think not. Be sure to hit the link to see if your region is getting bombarded with 4G LTE this week.

Jack White Lovers Can Stream Solo "Blunderbuss" Album Free on iTunes

The kids love White Stripes, and frontman Jack White in particular. As you probably already know, White is about to debut his first solo effort entitled Blunderbuss, and fans can spin the entire album free for a limited time thanks to iTunes. "After spending years reworking the rock 'n' roll foundation with The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, White has crafted his first statement as a solo artist," the iTunes page reads. "And yes, it rocks. Listen to the whole album for free right here. Then pre-order Blunderbuss and the track 'Sixteen Saltines' will download immediately." The full album lands on April 24 and can be preordered for a mere $10.99 -- but we don't have to tell you that, we probably had you sold with the mere mention of the man's name...

Pocketpedia Makes Triumphant Return to App Store

If you have a large collection of DVDs, books, CDs or video games, you've no doubt discovered Bruji's excellent Pedia apps for the Mac (aptly named DVDpedia, Bookpedia, CDpedia and Gamepedia, respectively). While these apps keep great track of your collection while at home, having them available while on the go has required a lot of work -- until now. Bruji today introduced Pocketpedia 3, its third attempt at an iOS client for syncing your desktop libraries to the iPhone. The first two versions were unfortunately sidelined by Amazon.com, which Bruji previously used to pull content data into its apps. The new Pocketpedia -- as well as the Mac Pedias themselves -- now retrieve this data from their open source library called Doghouse, which users can contribute to by sharing their own libraries. Even better, Pocketpedia 3 is now a universal app with native iPad support, Address Book integration and Retina Display graphics. New collections can be added from the iOS app, which then sync back to the Mac version along with entries marked as borrowed, returned or bought. Finally, the new iOS app is only $2.99 for the first week, so head to the App Store and grab it while you can.

Report: Apple, Samsung CEOs Talking Patent Settlement

Could there be a light at the end of the patent war tunnel? According to The Verge, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has sent attorneys for Apple and Samsung into mediation, where they'll have 90 days to hammer out "the possibility of a settlement." These talks will also include the respective CEOs for both companies -- Tim Cook in Apple's case, Choi Gee-sung in Samsung's. Should the mediation fail to stick, the rival companies will be forced to "submit a streamlined version of their claims and defenses" and we'll all be back for another round. Settlements have been rumored over the last few weeks, so it will be interesting to see what the two companies can come up with once they're locked away outside of the courtroom.

iPhone: Best Case Scenario - Element Cases Vapor COMP Epiphany iPhone Case

iPhone
Best Case Scenario - Element Cases Vapor COMP Epiphany iPhone Case
Apr 17th 2012, 19:57

After Antennagate, bumper cases became the norm as protective frames for the iPhone 4. A bumper offered some buffer between the iPhone and a table you'd set it down on, but it didn't protect either side of the chassis from scratches. This case from Element Case offers a three-part solution with its version of the bumper case by including a padded back plate and a screen protector for the front.

The Vapor COMP Epiphany iPhone case comes with its own instruction booklet, in case you needed any more proof that this is serious business First, you tack on the screen protector, and then you use the tiny Torx screwdriver keychain included with the case to install the aluminum frame. When you're finished, choose which backplate you like the most (either the Epiphany Blue Ultrasuede or the Hererra White Pearl, featured below), peel the adhesive paper from the back and place it so that it aligns with the rest of the case. It's a simple process, one that produces stylish results.

The bumper frame does not impact the use of either of the buttons on the iPhone 4S, though the power button doesn't have much feedback when you press it down. There's also a bit of rubber piping on the side of the case that helps you grib the phone. Since its material is very light, the bumper adds no extra weight to the iPhone, nor does it add bulk when you place it inside your pocket. The backplate is just as nonchalant, and feels like a soft piece of fabric when you grip it.

Overall, this is a fantastic case, and its colors look particularly nice paired with a white iPhone. However, the adhesive on the back could wear out over time. Since we had such limited time with the review unit, there's no guarantee that it could withstand hot temperatures or a steamy bathroom, which has often caused screen protectors to slide right off. Another caveat is that the case costs a little more than a Benjamin. That makes it a bit more pricey than the previously reviewed Rokform aluminum case, which offers a similar aesthetic and could easily be paired with front and back clear protectors from another vendor.

The bottom line. If you've got the cash flow and you're looking for a bumper case that's stands out from the rest, the Vapor COMP Epiphany case from Element Cases is well worth a look.

NYT > iPhone: The Top iPhone and iPad Apps on App Store

NYT > iPhone

Updated: Jan. 25, 2012

In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone, which instantly became one of the most talked-about consumer products ever. Thousands of customers lined up to be the first to buy the phones, which featured computing and Wi-Fi capabilities, along with a crisp, computer-like display on an innovative touch screen. Rivals, including Google, rushed phones with similar features onto the market.

In October 2011, the company unveiled an eagerly awaited new version of the device, the iPhone 4S, that included a "virtual assistant," Siri, that recognized voice commands by users to schedule appointments, dictate text messages and conduct Web searches.

Although the new phone was virtually indistinguishable on the outside from its predecessor, the iPhone 4, it was packed with better technical innards, including a more advanced camera. The phone also included a more powerful chip known as the A5, the same microprocessor that acts as the brains inside the iPad.

Though many Apple fans expressed disappointment about the lack of a design change, consumers reacted very differently. Apple said it sold more than four million iPhone 4S's during the device's first weekend on sale.

In January 2012, after a blockbuster fourth quarter, Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said the iPhone 4S accounted for the majority of iPhone sales. This statement took on added significance considering that at the time, the iPhone 3GS was free with a two-year contract, and the iPhone 4 cost $100. Even in a down economy and with a free iPhone in its portfolio, Apple still managed to sell the expensive, newer 4S to most of its customers.

Yet the free and reduced-price iPhones were still important to the company's business. Tero Kuittinen, a senior analyst at MGI Research, said the free iPhone 3GS gave Apple the opportunity to expand aggressively into markets where smartphones were not as popular yet, like China and Africa.

Jan Dawson, an analyst with Ovum, said not to underestimate the power of the free iPhone 3GS and the cheaper iPhone 4. "You'd better believe the other iPhones are selling, too," he said. "They're suddenly competitive with the lower-end smartphones that you used to get if you couldn't afford an iPhone."

The iPhone4s runs on two kinds of cellphone networks, GSM and CDMA, allowing its operation worldwide. Prices start at $199 for a model with 16 gigabytes of storage. The new phone is available on the AT&T, Verizon and Sprint networks.

In a Race With Android

Apple's strategy helped narrow the lead that had been gained by Android phones, powered by Google's operating system. Nielsen, the audience measurement firm, reported that 61.6 percent of United States smartphone consumers surveyed in October 2011 said they had gotten an Android phone within the previous three months, while only 25.1 percent got an iPhone.

By December 2011, though, Android's lead among people who had recently acquired a smartphone had narrowed to 46.9 percent, while 44.5 percent of consumers said they had bought an iPhone, Nielsen said. About 57 percent of iPhone owners in December said they got the new iPhone 4S, while the rest, 43 percent, got older iPhones.

Legal Dispute

Soon after the iPhone 4S was introduced, Samsung Electronics said that it would seek to block its sale in France and Italy, asserting that the phone violated its patents. In seeking a court order against its rival in the two large European markets, Samsung indicated a more aggressive stance in its expanding patent battle with Apple.

Samsung said that it planned to file for preliminary injunctions in other countries after further review. The two companies are locked in about 20 legal disputes over patents in nine countries, including Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States.

The fight began when Apple sued Samsung in April 2011 in the United States, asserting that the Samsung Galaxy lineup of smartphones and tablet devices "slavishly" copied the design, user interface and packaging of the iPhone and iPad. Samsung responded with its own lawsuits accusing Apple of violating its intellectual property.

An Issue of Control

Apple likes to maintain tight control over what programs can appear on the iPhone — a task that became a little bit harder in July 2010, when the Library of Congress, which has the power to define exceptions to an important copyright law, said that it was legal to bypass a phone's controls on what software it will run to get "lawfully obtained" programs to work.

The issue has been a topic of debate between Apple, which says it has the right to control the software on its devices, and technically adept users who want to customize their phones as they see fit.

Apple has also said that altering the phones encouraged the pirating of applications, exposed iPhones to security risks and taxed the company's customer support staff. But iPhone hobbyists say they simply want to have free range to use certain features and programs on their phones that Apple has limited or failed to offer.

Can Apple win in an intensely competitive market against rivals that are openly licensing their software to scores of companies? It faces that challenge not only in phones, but also in the market for tablet computers, where the iPad is about to take on a similar set of rivals.

The stakes are huge, as the mobile computing market could prove to be larger than the PC market ever was.

That leaves little room for error at Apple. The company must continue to create hit products, as a single misstep could give Android and other rivals an opportunity to make inroads and steal market share.
