iPhone: Monday Recap: Apple Taxes, Tweetbot and Skype Updates, Verizon Prepaid

iPhone
Monday Recap: Apple Taxes, Tweetbot and Skype Updates, Verizon Prepaid
Apr 30th 2012, 22:17

Tweetbot for iPhoneApple is finding out the hard way that with financial success comes increased scrutiny of their business practices, and onetime friend The New York Times seems to be pulling no punches in the wake of co-founder Steve Jobs' death in their "iEconomy" series. The newspaper has moved from reporting on Chinese factories to how Apple uses the system to cut down its own tax bill -- but no matter which side of the debate you happen to agree with, it's a fascinating read. Some details left out of the NYT report and more in the recap for Monday, April 30, 2012 ahead!

More Details on Apple and Taxes

The New York Times exposé on Apple's tax situation continues to make headlines today, but it appears the newspaper missed a few things in their report. AllThingsD decided to set the record straight with a few details of their own, including the fact that the NYT story is about seven years too late -- Apple's Nevada subsidiary has existed for years, for one. While the report tries to paint Apple as a vampire upon the city of Cupertino, slowly draining the city government of corporate taxes, the reality is that state governments are largely responsible for funding the likes of De Anza College, the community college which the Times seems to indicate has fallen on hard times thanks to the loss of tax dollars from Apple and other corporations. The report also ignores sales taxes paid to states where Apple hardware is sold, which could account for another $3.7 billion more paid out across the country than noted. For its part, Apple is boasting about the number of jobs it's been able to create, apparently implying those hold more value than any lost revenue from corporate taxes.

Tweetbot 2.3 Released, Improves Tweet Detail View, Better Integration

We're still holding out hope for a Mac version of Tweetbot, but until then, developer Tapbots LLC continues to refine the existing iOS apps for both iPhone/iPod touch and iPad, with both hitting version 2.3 earlier today. Among the features in the update are a new tweet detail view with inline conversations and replies, new gestures, a new conversation view, Droplr support, optional setting for timeline sync bookmarks, a reorganized tweet drawer and oh so many more cool little things. Seriously, it's easier to just head to the App Store and get your update going than to sit here and read about it -- just make sure to come back and finish up when you're done, naturally.

Verizon Introduces New Prepaid Plans

There's still no prepaid iPhone available from Verizon (or any other big U.S. carrier), but Verizon Wireless announced today that the carrier will be rolling out some new prepaid plans starting tomorrow, May 1. The Android-powered Samsung Illusion will be available for $169.99 from retailers nationwide, but the more compelling prospect is Big Red's new Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MiFi 4510L, which can be picked up for $129.99. Prepaid 4G LTE plans are available starting at $15 for 250MB, with 3GB available for $60 per month or 10GB for $90 per month. Or, you know, you could just go buy a 4G LTE-equipped new iPad and have it double as a mobile hotspot. We're just sayin'...

iTunes Match Rolls Out in Austria, Greece, Italy

MacRumors is reporting that iTunes Match appears to be going live in a number of new countries around the globe, with confirmed launches in Austria, Greece and Italy thus far. Users in those countries are being required to agree to updated iTunes Store terms and conditions which specifically address the iTunes Match service, while some users have actually been able to sign up for the service as well. Apple has yet to announce additional countries, but evidence suggests that iTunes Match may also be rolling out to Bulgaria, Portugal and Slovenia as well. Any MacLife.com readers in these countries seeing some Match love?

Skype iOS Apps Updated with UI Enhancements

The Skype iOS apps for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad got bumped to version 4.09 today, including a variety of improvements to the user interface as well as a new feature, the ability to move the video preview on your own screen, particularly handy on smaller screens like the iPhone. Both apps will now automatically restart if they unexpectedly shut down, with improved accessibility and stability overall. Skype 4.0 now includes a new sign in screen with an updated design for contacts and messages as well as other minor UI improvements. As always, both apps are available free of charge from the App Store, so hit the links above to grab 'em.

iPhone: Jetpack Joyride for iOS Announces Huge Content Update, 15 New Gadgets

iPhone
Jetpack Joyride for iOS Announces Huge Content Update, 15 New Gadgets
Apr 26th 2012, 18:00

Jetpack Joyride, an auto-runner type iOS game from Halfbrick Studios, is hands down one of the most addictive games I've ever played. The "just one more" urge every time a round ends, the large assortment of goofy items unlockable through coin collection – it took every ounce of my feeble willpower to pull myself away and play other worthy titles. But thanks to a massive update, the addiction is back in a big way.

As announced back in March, during the annual Game Developer's Conference, the 1.3 update to Jetpack Joyride is more than just bug fixes and performance improvements. A whopping 15 gadgets are added to high-flying protagonist Barry Steakfries' arsenal, changing the game drastically, for better or worse.

Gadgets are purchased through the game's store, the Stash. Spending some collected coins – or buying a handful of coins through in-app purchases – allows you to buy any of the 15 available upgrades. Gadgets are organized into a tier system, with a particular number of purchases required to unlock the next level. Regardless of the number of gadgets in your inventory, you can only equip two at the beginning of any run.

The gadgets themselves vary in use, but they're all designed in the typically cartoonish manner of Halfbrick. The Freeze-O-Matic, for example, places Barry in a block of ice immediately following a death, allowing him to slide along floor for those precious extra meters. Free Ride, one of the highest-tier gadgets, gives Barry a vehicle right at the start of the run. Combining certain gadgets offers a clear advantage, with some pairings – like the Gravity Belt and Air Barrys – noted in the game's menu as "high mobility," for example.

When the update was announced during GDC, Andrew Hayward made the accurate assumption that these purchasable devices could actually irritate some hardcore Jetpack Joyride players. A big part of the game's draw is the competition on the leaderboard, and frankly, the gadgets do provide an edge; and edge that's easily obtained through in-app purchases. All that said, I'm actually enjoying the new additions. Games like Jetpack Joyride are immensely addicting, but the repeated task of flying through static levels can grow monotonous. A new twist is exactly what this app needed.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to crush everyone's score with my Ezy-Dodge Missiles.

iPhone: How to Transition Your MobileMe Account to iCloud

iPhone
How to Transition Your MobileMe Account to iCloud
Apr 30th 2012, 17:19

With the June 30 deadline fast approaching, the eventual end of MobileMe is looming closer each day. Many of you have asked how to handle this change, and whether Apple will continue support for your MobileMe files and websites. Read on and we'll answer those for you, as well as show you how to backup your iDisk files to your Mac and transition your MobileMe account to iCloud for email and other Apple services.

First Things First, Upgrade to Lion

Apple has decided to make Lion a required feature for iCloud sync services. While you can still access the web version of iCloud (iCloud.com), you will need to have Lion to sync Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Photo Stream, Documents & Data, and use the Back to My Mac and Find My Mac features.

If you are still running Leopard, then you can get a free copy of Snow Leopard to help your upgrade route to Lion. You'll need Snow Leopard to download Lion from the Mac App Store. To upgrade to Snow Leopard for free, check out this article.

Moving iWeb Content

While MobileMe included a hosting element with iWeb, iCloud does not allow you to host your website. Luckily, iWeb will still function as an application on your Mac after the MobileMe closure, and will allow you to upload your iWeb sites to another hosting provider. The benefit of using a dedicated host is that you'll have full control over your sites, and fortunately for you we have an article about your transition to a dedicated host. However, you should be aware that support for the iWeb application could end soon, and a future OS X upgrade could make the application stop working.

And what if you host your own podcast on iWeb? Follow our guide here.

Moving Photo Galleries

The MobileMe Photo Gallery will not be available once you transition over to iCloud. However, you can still access and download the photos available in your galleries. Assuming you've turned on Downloads, you will be able to navigate to the following URL in your web browser:

gallery.me.com/usernamehere

Replace "usernamehere" with your username, and your MobileMe Gallery will load. Navigate to any of your albums. If your photos are available for download, you will see a "Download" button in the toolbar. Click this button to save the entire album contents. In the dialog that pops up, click the Download button once again, and a zip file containing all of your photos in that album will be downloaded. Repeat this process for multiple albums.

Say Goodbye to iDisk, Hello to iCloud

Another feature that will be disappearing with MobileMe is iDisk. Fortunately, you should have time to download all of the files that are hosted on your iDisk using the tutorial found in this article. You can then sync those files using Dropbox or Google Drive, if you miss the file syncing feature of MobileMe.

Transitioning from MobileMe to iCloud

Lastly, you'll have to transition your MobileMe account to iCloud. This process will take a few minutes and can be completed by going to me.com/move. On this website, you will be taken through the process required to move all of your email and other MobileMe account settings over to iCloud. After the transfer process, you will be able to log in with your old MobileMe credentials on iCloud.com. Remember that you'll need to log into your iCloud account on your Mac and iOS device to enable email, calendar syncing, Find My iPhone, and other features.
