iPhone: 4 Alternatives to Instagram

4 Alternatives to Instagram

Despite Facebook's massive buyout and its rollout onto Android, we love Instagram. It's a fun blend of simple photography and social networking. But that doesn't mean there aren't some worthy alternatives to our favorite photo sharing service. While we can't see ourselves leaving Instagram anytime soon (none of these apps feature editing tools or filters, for instance), there are four social photo-sharing services worth checking out in the App Store.

Do you see yourself replacing Instagram with any of these apps? Or are developers just trying to cash in on Instagram's wild success? Let us know what you think in the comments!

1. Path

Path advertises itself as "a journal for sharing life with close friends and family." Unlike Instagram, it also allows you to share text and video. It's a bit like Twitter and Instagram had a baby that you only want to share with the people closest to you--not the hundreds of strangers that you admire.

2. Mobli

Unlike Path, Mobli specifically inspires you to follow strangers by showing you a list of famous users to follow the second you create an account. Like Instagram, it's totally photo-centric and lets you view popular posts and photos from other users in a feed. However it also organizes photos by topics, such as your location, sports, news, and much more, making it more social and certainly more worldly oriented than Instagram.

3. PicPlz

PicPlz is essentially Instagram without the filters. It lets you network with your friends, shows their activity, and displays interesting photos. That's pretty much as far as this app goes, though. If you want a no frills version of Instagram (bet you didn't know that was possible), this is it.

4. Flickr

Before Instagram, there was Flickr, the ultimate service for social photography. Flickr isn't necessarily an alternative to Instagram--in fact we'd say it works perfectly with Instagram, since we can upload both our regular and Instagrammed photos to it. But, Flickr's app specifically lets you take photos in app and instantly upload. So, if you love Flickr's robust set of social options, you might find that you don't even need to use Instagram--just work directly through Flickr!
