Apple WWDC 2012 logoWWDC 2012 is less than two weeks away now, so that means Apple is finally getting all their ducks in a row with developers, today announcing not only a schedule of events (minus a bunch of stuff yet to be announced), an iOS app for the event and even a time and date for the keynote. It's sure to be an exciting event, and you can bet that MacLife.com will have all the details as things unfold. In the meantime, pull up a chair and soak in the day's tech news for Tuesday, May 29, 2012.

BGR Claims to Have Photos of New iOS 6 Maps App

If you like your iOS 6 rumors ladled with a heavy coating of blurry photographic evidence, we might have just what you're looking for. BGR claims to have photos of the new Maps app that Apple plans to introduce with iOS 6, which will presumably be at least previewed at the upcoming WWDC 2012 conference on June 11. We'd be willing to bet iOS developers will likely take home an early beta build of the new software at the same time, which is said to ditch Google Maps in favor of the one Apple has quietly been building in the background, which includes a swanky 3D mode among other feats of strength. The photos on BGR's website don't prove all that much, but we're pretty sure that Apple will be ditching Google sooner than later, so it's worth a peek.

Apple Posts WWDC 2012 Schedule, iOS App

Speaking of WWDC 2012, Apple today posted scheduling information on its website for those developers lucky enough to attend. This year's conference includes six technical tracks and more than 100 sessions and labs, although the schedule includes an awful lot of spots where "Session To Be Announced" is posted, which might as well just be further evidence that iOS 6 (and probably a gold master of OS X Mountain Lion) will be the stars of the show. Developers can also now download the WWDC 2012 iOS app, which will be their guide to the week-long conference in San Francisco when it kicks off on June 11.

Rumor: Next iPhone Back Revealed?

9to5Mac is reporting that the iPhone repair experts over at iFixyouri have turned up parts from a Chinese supplier which look an awful lot like those for the next iPhone -- the one that's a bit taller and features a smaller dock connector, as well as a headphone jack at the bottom of the device. That last one is a new chapter in the sixth-generation iPhone rumor saga which seems probable enough. Finally, the parts are also available in two other colors aside from the usual black and white, which seems to indicate that Apple may open the handset up to some iPod-style color schemes. If that sounds crazy, keep in mind this particular parts supplier was the same one who first outed the white iPad, so they have a bit of street credibility for this kind of thing.

WWDC 2012 Keynote: June 11 at 10am PST

One final WWDC 2012-related item for today's recap: All Things D is reporting that Apple has announced a date and time for the much-anticipated keynote at the developer conference, where Cupertino is expected to at least preview iOS 6 and possibly firm up its plans for OS X Mountain Lion at the same time. To no one's surprise, the date is Monday, June 11, 2012 -- the first day of the conference -- and the festivities kick off at 10am PST (1pm EST), which is fairly customary for Apple as well. The event will mark the first time CEO Tim Cook has presided over WWDC since taking over in his new role, and there should be plenty of cool stuff discussed there, given that Apple has been strangely quiet thus far this year where new product is concerned.

Welcome to the New Bitly

The Bitly Blog has announced some major changes to the URL-shortening service, not the least of which involves a new iOS app for iPhone for saving and sharing links from anywhere. The feature is also available with the company's new "bitmarklet" (their own version of a souped-up bookmarklet) as well as an extension for the Chrome browser. "What you see here today is the new bitly!" the blog announced today. "We've been hard at work adding features that make it easier and faster to find and share interesting stuff. Special thanks to the hundreds of users who helped us through all our rounds of testing." Bitly has posted a new knowledge base to help guide existing users around all of the website changes, and the new app can be downloaded free from the App Store right now.
