It's no secret that iOS developer Marco Arment has no interest in porting his popular Instapaper app to the Android platform -- so he got Mobelux to do it for him. On top of that new release, the iOS version also added background update locations over the weekend.
Developer Marco Arment has introduced Instapaper for Android, an official port of the iOS app developed and maintained by partner Mobelux, the folks behind the Tumblr app for both platforms as well as apps for the iHome line of clock radios and speaker systems for iOS devices.
Instapaper for Android finally brings the power of Arment's critically acclaimed, award-winning service to the Android platform -- both smartphones and tablets running version 2.1 or higher. While the Android version doesn't offer complete feature parity with the iOS edition at launch, Mobelux plans to offer frequent, free updates.
"We're working hard to add additional features to Instapaper for Android," the company's FAQ page reveals. "We believe that we've captured the core Instapaper experience but can't wait to make the app even better. All future updates will be free to existing customers who purchase Instapaper for Android."
Instapaper for Android is available now from Google's Play Store for $2.99, and is currently under review with Amazon's Appstore and Barnes & Noble's NOOK Market, where they are expected to be available soon.
In addition to playing overlord on the Android version, Arment continues to improve the iOS edition, slipping Instapaper 4.2.2 into the App Store over the weekend. While primarily a bug fix update that offers improved typography, the update adds the ability to automatically download new articles in the background whenever a user enters or leaves a certain location -- for example, when leaving home in the morning so content is refreshed for your work commute.
Instapaper 4.2.2 for iOS is now available in the App Store; the universal app is $4.99 for new users and as always, a free update for existing customers, compatible with all devices running iOS 5.0 or later.
