Apple Modifies Proposed Nano-SIM, Standards Vote Expected Any Day

Apple proposed nano-SIMA new report claims that Apple has adjusted its proposed nano-SIM standard to address complaints by Nokia, with a final vote expected soon -- even though the technology itself isn't expected before 2013.

The Verge is reporting that Apple has made modifications to its proposed 4FF nano-SIM technology, and ETSI members are now voting on the new standard. A verdict is expected in mid-May, which will either weigh in Apple's favor or lean toward Nokia's more radical approach.

Claiming they "work with everybody," SIM card maker Giesecke & Devrient is on hand for CTIA, where they are displaying Apple's proposed nano-SIM design, which further reduces the size of the current 3FF micro-SIM utilized in the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, as well as all generations of the 3G/4G-enabled iPads.

While Giesecke & Devrient is a voting member of ETSI, the company wouldn't divulge if they put their weight behind Apple's design, although the report seems to indicate they have, considering Nokia's competing design was a no-show at their booth.

Nokia had loudly protested against Apple's nano-SIM, which is far more conservative than their own approach, mostly because "a nano-SIM should be shaped in such a way that it would be difficult or impossible for a customer to accidentally jam it into a micro-SIM slot."

Apple has apparently addressed those concerns by adding a small amount of plastic around the edges of the electrical contacts -- something that could prove fatal to Nokia's own design when all the votes are tallied.

Even if Apple's nano-SIM becomes the new standard, Giesecke & Devrient doesn't expect to see it put to use until 2013 at the earliest, presumably in time for the iPad 4, if not the iPhone 6.
