NYT > iPhone: GADGETWISE; Tip Of The Week

NYT > iPhone

Updated: Jan. 25, 2012

In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone, which instantly became one of the most talked-about consumer products ever. Thousands of customers lined up to be the first to buy the phones, which featured computing and Wi-Fi capabilities, along with a crisp, computer-like display on an innovative touch screen. Rivals, including Google, rushed phones with similar features onto the market.

In October 2011, the company unveiled an eagerly awaited new version of the device, the iPhone 4S, that included a "virtual assistant," Siri, that recognized voice commands by users to schedule appointments, dictate text messages and conduct Web searches.

Although the new phone was virtually indistinguishable on the outside from its predecessor, the iPhone 4, it was packed with better technical innards, including a more advanced camera. The phone also included a more powerful chip known as the A5, the same microprocessor that acts as the brains inside the iPad.

Though many Apple fans expressed disappointment about the lack of a design change, consumers reacted very differently. Apple said it sold more than four million iPhone 4S's during the device's first weekend on sale.

In January 2012, after a blockbuster fourth quarter, Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said the iPhone 4S accounted for the majority of iPhone sales. This statement took on added significance considering that at the time, the iPhone 3GS was free with a two-year contract, and the iPhone 4 cost $100. Even in a down economy and with a free iPhone in its portfolio, Apple still managed to sell the expensive, newer 4S to most of its customers.

Yet the free and reduced-price iPhones were still important to the company's business. Tero Kuittinen, a senior analyst at MGI Research, said the free iPhone 3GS gave Apple the opportunity to expand aggressively into markets where smartphones were not as popular yet, like China and Africa.

Jan Dawson, an analyst with Ovum, said not to underestimate the power of the free iPhone 3GS and the cheaper iPhone 4. "You'd better believe the other iPhones are selling, too," he said. "They're suddenly competitive with the lower-end smartphones that you used to get if you couldn't afford an iPhone."

The iPhone4s runs on two kinds of cellphone networks, GSM and CDMA, allowing its operation worldwide. Prices start at $199 for a model with 16 gigabytes of storage. The new phone is available on the AT&T, Verizon and Sprint networks.

In a Race With Android

Apple's strategy helped narrow the lead that had been gained by Android phones, powered by Google's operating system. Nielsen, the audience measurement firm, reported that 61.6 percent of United States smartphone consumers surveyed in October 2011 said they had gotten an Android phone within the previous three months, while only 25.1 percent got an iPhone.

By December 2011, though, Android's lead among people who had recently acquired a smartphone had narrowed to 46.9 percent, while 44.5 percent of consumers said they had bought an iPhone, Nielsen said. About 57 percent of iPhone owners in December said they got the new iPhone 4S, while the rest, 43 percent, got older iPhones.

Legal Dispute

Soon after the iPhone 4S was introduced, Samsung Electronics said that it would seek to block its sale in France and Italy, asserting that the phone violated its patents. In seeking a court order against its rival in the two large European markets, Samsung indicated a more aggressive stance in its expanding patent battle with Apple.

Samsung said that it planned to file for preliminary injunctions in other countries after further review. The two companies are locked in about 20 legal disputes over patents in nine countries, including Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States.

The fight began when Apple sued Samsung in April 2011 in the United States, asserting that the Samsung Galaxy lineup of smartphones and tablet devices "slavishly" copied the design, user interface and packaging of the iPhone and iPad. Samsung responded with its own lawsuits accusing Apple of violating its intellectual property.

An Issue of Control

Apple likes to maintain tight control over what programs can appear on the iPhone — a task that became a little bit harder in July 2010, when the Library of Congress, which has the power to define exceptions to an important copyright law, said that it was legal to bypass a phone's controls on what software it will run to get "lawfully obtained" programs to work.

The issue has been a topic of debate between Apple, which says it has the right to control the software on its devices, and technically adept users who want to customize their phones as they see fit.

Apple has also said that altering the phones encouraged the pirating of applications, exposed iPhones to security risks and taxed the company's customer support staff. But iPhone hobbyists say they simply want to have free range to use certain features and programs on their phones that Apple has limited or failed to offer.

Can Apple win in an intensely competitive market against rivals that are openly licensing their software to scores of companies? It faces that challenge not only in phones, but also in the market for tablet computers, where the iPad is about to take on a similar set of rivals.

The stakes are huge, as the mobile computing market could prove to be larger than the PC market ever was.

That leaves little room for error at Apple. The company must continue to create hit products, as a single misstep could give Android and other rivals an opportunity to make inroads and steal market share.

Thursday Recap: iPhone Rules Up North, iPad Full Charge, Make Music with Your iPad
Mar 22nd 2012, 22:27

Make Music with Your iPadThe new iPad will be a week old tomorrow, but the complaints continue to pour in about Apple's three million-selling tablet (and they've likely sold many more since Monday's announcement, we'd guess). We've got no complaints here -- every day with our new little friend is more glorious than the last, especially thanks to all of these Retina-optimized app updates which keep arriving. In fact, we're off to give our new iPad another hug, so while we're doing that, please have a look at the day's news for Thursday, March 22, 2012, won't you…?

BlackBerry Finally Succumbs to iPhone On Its Home Turf

It's been relatively quiet on the Research in Motion front as the BlackBerry maker continues to lick its wounds from stumbles made in both the smartphone and tablet markets. According to Bloomberg, the company now has another problem on their hands as Canadian businesses begin fleeing RIM's products in favor of the iPhone. Data compiled by IDC and Bloomberg reveals that RIM shipped 2.08 million BlackBerry handsets in their native Canada last year, while Apple's iconic handset shipped 2.85 million -- a big change from 2010 when the BlackBerry bested the iPhone by half a million units, or 2008, when RIM outsold the relatively new iPhone by almost five to one. "For RIM, in its home market, to lose that Number One position to iPhone is strategically important," explained Paul Taylor, a fund manager at BMO Harris Private Banking in Toronto. "It does identify, even with a home-country bias, how consumers are responding to the greater functionality of the iPhone." RIM's domestic sales account for seven percent of the company's revenue, which fell 23 percent in the fiscal third quarter as U.S. sales continue to nosedive.

Sigh: New iPad Can't Get a Break, Now Charging Indicator is Off

The new iPad runs too hot! It's gobbling up all of my 4G LTE data! The Wi-Fi is broken! Anything else left to complain about, folks? Well, Ars Technica might have one for you. It seems that none other than MacLife.com pal Dr. Raymond M. Soneira of DisplayMate has discovered that the new iPad "continues to charge well after the OS shows that it's reach full capacity." That means a 100 percent charge actually is a bit less, with Dr. Ray claiming that users should leave the new iPad plugged into AC for at least an hour after the display shows a full charge "if getting maximum battery run time is crucial." Now that should just about cover all the complaining about the new iPad -- can we just enjoy the thing already?

ORLY? Reuters Says Some Koreans Say Your Next iPhone May Be 4.6 Inches

There have been plenty of rumors that the next iPhone will get super-sized, but a new report from Reuters is contradicting those who believe it may top out at four inches by claiming the next Apple handset will have "a sharper and bigger 4.6-inch 'retina' display" when it launches in the second quarter of this year. The report comes by way of South Korean media, but was quickly disputed by the likes of Daring Fireball's John Gruber, who points out a larger screen size is likely to require every app in the App Store to be redesigned or resized accordingly. The report also seems to give false hope that the next iPhone will rear its beautiful head around June of this year, when most pundits believe that Apple will continue to revamp the iPhone in the fall as it did with last year's iPhone 4S.

PSA: Make Music with Your iPad

There's no denying that the iPad is hot (with some claiming it's literally hot to the touch), and musicians are among those finding revolutionary new ways to use it in their performances. So it's no surprise to discover that fellow Mac|Lifer Ben Harvell has a new book that combines these two subjects into one melodic symphony called Make Music with Your iPad. "Music recording and performance apps are some of the top grossing applications for iPad," the book's synopsis reads. "Major label artists are making use of Apple's iOS products and apps to make music and have even recorded complete albums on the iPad. Written by an experienced Apple and digital music journalist, this unique resource opens your eyes -- and ears -- to the amazing possibilities that the iPad offers as a musical creation device for both novices and professionals." The $29.99 paperback is discounted on Amazon.com, who is also offering a Kindle edition for even less ($16.49 at this writing) -- which means you can read the book and then immediately start making music on the same device.

Screens for iOS Gains Retina Support, Bug Fixes

Edovia has announced the availability of Screens for iOS 2.0.2, a free update to the company's VNC app which adds support for the new iPad's Retina Display. There have been a veritable tidal wave of Retina updates to the App Store over the last week or so and there will surely be more to come. Screens 2.0.2 also offers improved connection detection as well as fixes for password management, the German-Swiss keyboard and some random crashes users were experiencing. The universal app update clocks in at 4.9MB and is available now as a free App Store update for existing users.

iPhone: Apple Rumor Roundup: New Line of MacBooks on the Horizon, iPhone 5 with LTE, and a 7-inch iPad

iPhone
Apple Rumor Roundup: New Line of MacBooks on the Horizon, iPhone 5 with LTE, and a 7-inch iPad
Mar 22nd 2012, 21:13

Now that we've all had enough time with the new iPad to separate the facts from the fiction surrounding the device, it's time to move on to more important matters: The unconfirmed scuttlebutt surrounding Apple's upcoming hardware and software releases. This week, we're looking at rumors surrounding the MacBook Air, the iPhone 5's probable inclusion of LTE connectivity, and whether or not we'll see a smaller iPad in the near future.

New Line of MacBooks on the Horizon?

According to Boy Genius Report and DigiTimes, Apple is set to release an ultra thin 15-inch laptop featuring ports on both sides of it's chassis with no ethernet port or optical drive. Whether Apple will be branding it as a MacBook Air, or doing away with their Pro line of laptops over time is hard to say. We have a feeling that we could see the same kind of one unified product rebranding that the iPad recently underwent. MacBook Air? MacBook Pro? Why not keep things simple and just offer MacBook?

iPhone 5 Could Finally Play with the Big Boys

Rumor has it that the iPhone 5 will feature 4G LTE connectivity. According to Boy Genius Report, along with 4G connectivity, the next iteration of the smartphone will also feature a faster processor and a larger display. Is there any truth to this? Maybe: Reuters has it that the iPhone 5 may use a 4.6-inch display, citing the fact that the company has already started placing orders with suppliers. Unsurprisingly, both LG and Samsung, two of Apple's go-to companies where display technology us concerned, failed to comment on the subject.

Maybe a Smaller iPad is Coming, After All

Now that we've got a new full-sized iPad to satisfy us, it's time to lust over the possibility of something else: a smaller iPad. The Korea Times claims that Apple may be wheeling and dealing with Samsung in order to secure some of the parts required to assemble a iPad that rocks a 7.68-inch screen. This could provide a similarly sized counter to the Amazon Kindle Fire, which found its way under so many Christmas trees last winter. Whether Apple will be able to come close to the price point Amazon offered their tablet at remains to be seen. (Via TabTimes)

This Week's Most Exciting New iOS Game Releases: Angry Birds Space, Hunger Games and More
Mar 22nd 2012, 19:28

There is almost always a plethora of new titles that hit the App Store every week, but this go-round seemed a little sparse. That said, there's no shortage of games worth checking out--especially if you're looking for some heavyweights. From blockbuster games to blockbuster movie tie-ins, and a few under-the-radar hits, this week might be light in number of releases but its no slouch in quality.

Angry Birds Space

Because 500 million downloads just isn't enough, Rovio is sending its Angry Birds franchise to a whole new frontier, and its out of this world. Angry Birds Space ($2.99, iPad) sends both the birds and the pigs into the depths of the galaxy after being sucked into a vortex. The game comes with coinciding merchandise launches at WalMart, Target and National Geographic. We're starting to think this isn't a game but an exploratory venture for Rovio's space colony.

The Hunger Games: Girl on Fire

The first blockbuster movie of the year is upon us, and so is its iOS game tie-in. The Hunger Games: Girl on Fire (Free, Universal) puts players in the shoes of Katniss Everdeen as she attempts to gather necessities for her family while fighting to survive in the dangerous woods outsider her home. This title is sure to please fans of the Hunger Games series as well as indie gamers, as a dream team of designers are behind it.

rComplex

If you're looking to pick up a new title that will show off the Retina display on your new iPad, look no further than rComplex ($0.99, Universal). Its a uniquely beautiful game that uses simple colors and deceivingly detailed imagery to create seven levels of stunning landscapes that you'll race across to escape the darkness. With narrative story telling and original music compositions, this is one running title that looks like it could go the distance.

Madcoaster

What happens when a roller coaster goes off the rails? Usually fiery explosions and untimely deaths, but not in Madcoaster ($0.99, Universal). Instead, this is one designed for hopping the track to collect coins and switch platforms. The more you do, the better upgrades for your coaster. It looks to be a smooth game, but for the poor avatars trapped behind the safety bar of the roller coaster seats, its going to be a bumpy ride.

Hunters 2

In a world where overpopulation has sent colonies to the moon and corporations have gained power through wealth, the only laws are set in contracts. In Hunters 2 ($4.99, Universal), you'll play as the leader of a team of mercenaries that are looking to make a mark as bounty hunters--but not without a challenge from a rival group.
