NYT > iPhone: Taxi Rides Are Getting Smarter by the App

NYT > iPhone

Updated: Jan. 25, 2012

In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone, which instantly became one of the most talked-about consumer products ever. Thousands of customers lined up to be the first to buy the phones, which featured computing and Wi-Fi capabilities, along with a crisp, computer-like display on an innovative touch screen. Rivals, including Google, rushed phones with similar features onto the market.

In October 2011, the company unveiled an eagerly awaited new version of the device, the iPhone 4S, that included a "virtual assistant," Siri, that recognized voice commands by users to schedule appointments, dictate text messages and conduct Web searches.

Although the new phone was virtually indistinguishable on the outside from its predecessor, the iPhone 4, it was packed with better technical innards, including a more advanced camera. The phone also included a more powerful chip known as the A5, the same microprocessor that acts as the brains inside the iPad.

Though many Apple fans expressed disappointment about the lack of a design change, consumers reacted very differently. Apple said it sold more than four million iPhone 4S's during the device's first weekend on sale.

In January 2012, after a blockbuster fourth quarter, Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said the iPhone 4S accounted for the majority of iPhone sales. This statement took on added significance considering that at the time, the iPhone 3GS was free with a two-year contract, and the iPhone 4 cost $100. Even in a down economy and with a free iPhone in its portfolio, Apple still managed to sell the expensive, newer 4S to most of its customers.

Yet the free and reduced-price iPhones were still important to the company's business. Tero Kuittinen, a senior analyst at MGI Research, said the free iPhone 3GS gave Apple the opportunity to expand aggressively into markets where smartphones were not as popular yet, like China and Africa.

Jan Dawson, an analyst with Ovum, said not to underestimate the power of the free iPhone 3GS and the cheaper iPhone 4. "You'd better believe the other iPhones are selling, too," he said. "They're suddenly competitive with the lower-end smartphones that you used to get if you couldn't afford an iPhone."

The iPhone4s runs on two kinds of cellphone networks, GSM and CDMA, allowing its operation worldwide. Prices start at $199 for a model with 16 gigabytes of storage. The new phone is available on the AT&T, Verizon and Sprint networks.

In a Race With Android

Apple's strategy helped narrow the lead that had been gained by Android phones, powered by Google's operating system. Nielsen, the audience measurement firm, reported that 61.6 percent of United States smartphone consumers surveyed in October 2011 said they had gotten an Android phone within the previous three months, while only 25.1 percent got an iPhone.

By December 2011, though, Android's lead among people who had recently acquired a smartphone had narrowed to 46.9 percent, while 44.5 percent of consumers said they had bought an iPhone, Nielsen said. About 57 percent of iPhone owners in December said they got the new iPhone 4S, while the rest, 43 percent, got older iPhones.

Legal Dispute

Soon after the iPhone 4S was introduced, Samsung Electronics said that it would seek to block its sale in France and Italy, asserting that the phone violated its patents. In seeking a court order against its rival in the two large European markets, Samsung indicated a more aggressive stance in its expanding patent battle with Apple.

Samsung said that it planned to file for preliminary injunctions in other countries after further review. The two companies are locked in about 20 legal disputes over patents in nine countries, including Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States.

The fight began when Apple sued Samsung in April 2011 in the United States, asserting that the Samsung Galaxy lineup of smartphones and tablet devices "slavishly" copied the design, user interface and packaging of the iPhone and iPad. Samsung responded with its own lawsuits accusing Apple of violating its intellectual property.

An Issue of Control

Apple likes to maintain tight control over what programs can appear on the iPhone — a task that became a little bit harder in July 2010, when the Library of Congress, which has the power to define exceptions to an important copyright law, said that it was legal to bypass a phone's controls on what software it will run to get "lawfully obtained" programs to work.

The issue has been a topic of debate between Apple, which says it has the right to control the software on its devices, and technically adept users who want to customize their phones as they see fit.

Apple has also said that altering the phones encouraged the pirating of applications, exposed iPhones to security risks and taxed the company's customer support staff. But iPhone hobbyists say they simply want to have free range to use certain features and programs on their phones that Apple has limited or failed to offer.

Can Apple win in an intensely competitive market against rivals that are openly licensing their software to scores of companies? It faces that challenge not only in phones, but also in the market for tablet computers, where the iPad is about to take on a similar set of rivals.

The stakes are huge, as the mobile computing market could prove to be larger than the PC market ever was.

That leaves little room for error at Apple. The company must continue to create hit products, as a single misstep could give Android and other rivals an opportunity to make inroads and steal market share.

iPhone
Friday Recap: iTranslate Voice, iCloud Beta Site, KLIK, Foxconn's Apple HDTV Slip
May 11th 2012, 21:39

iTranslate Voice appThe big news of the day has to be the discovery of a beta iCloud website, which has the rumor blogs grabbing up paper bags in an effort to stifle their hyperventilation. Seems as if we'll be seeing new Reminders and Notes web apps as part of the iCloud website, but personally we'd prefer some of the old-school MobileMe settings and features to come back. Oh well, we can't have everything -- but one thing we can have is a break for the weekend, right after you have a look at the news for this Friday, May 11, 2012.

Siri + Language Translation = iTranslate Voice for iOS

Apple's Siri virtual assistant may sometimes seem like she's a miracle worker, but after using the iPhone 4S for a while, all of the things she's not capable of soon come to light. One of those is language translation, but fear not -- developer Sonico GmbH, makers of the iTranslate app, have created their own App Store solution called iTranslate Voice, which emulates the Siri experience and translates whatever you speak into it into one of 31 different languages. The full list includes English (US), English (UK), English (Australia), Spanish (Spain), Spanish (United States), Spanish (Mexico), French (France), French (Canada), German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin (China), Mandarin (Taiwan), Cantonese, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Polish and Russian, a few others are also available for voice output as well. Since the 3.4MB app just launched on Thursday, the developer is having a sale and it can be yours for a mere 99 cents, but it will be worth its weight in gold if you're about to head overseas. Just make sure you have an internet connection, which is required to use iTranslate Voice.

iCloud Beta Website Spills Beans on Notes, Reminders Web Apps

9to5Mac is reporting that Apple has accidentally leaked some forthcoming features of iCloud, following the discovery of a beta website with web apps for Notes and Reminders -- both of which are making the leap from iOS to OS X Mountain Lion this summer. Code strings for the beta website have also turned up references to iOS 6, which is expected to be previewed next month at WWDC 2012 in San Francisco. The beta.icloud.com website has been up and down sporadically all day, but we can indeed confirm its existence, which requires a developer account to access. But don't worry, we're sure that Apple plans even more surprises for us in a few short weeks...

KLIK Brings Facial Recognition, Instagram Style

Face.com has announced the release of its KLIK app on Thursday, a camera app that uses facial recognition to quickly tag Facebook friends in real-time. The free app requires a Facebook account and iOS 4.3 or later, but also adds some Instagram-style fun with "Face Filters," the app's own built-in technology focused on making faces appear better in photos. While you're not using KLIK to snap photos, the app can be used to check out Facebook feeds nearby, for your friends and even other photos. Perhaps the star feature of KLIK is its ability to see your friends' names instantly appear next to their faces, even before you've taken a photo of them -- or the app can be trained to learn the names of people it doesn't recognize. KLIK is available now from the App Store and it's absolutely free.

Report: Foxconn CEO Claims to Be Prepping Apple HDTV

As part of a profile on manufacturer Foxconn's plans to shift into distribution, China Daily appears to have inadvertently let slip some news about another project more near and dear to Apple fans. Foxconn CEO Terry Gou reportedly told the newspaper the company "is making preparations for iTV, Apple Inc.'s rumored upcoming high-definition television." Now before you trip over yourself in search of a credit card to buy the thing, the report notes that neither development nor manufacturing has actually started yet -- so we don't necessarily know anything more about the fabled Apple HDTV than we did yesterday. Take it for what it's worth, folks...

Dropbox Updates SDK to Appease App Store Reviewers

MacRumors is reporting that Dropbox appears to have tweaked its SDK to Apple's liking, with iOS developers noting that their Dropbox-enabled apps are again being approved by App Store reviewers. Always trying to get developers to stick to the letter of its frequently vague App Store laws, app rejections started piling up a week or so ago, all related to how the Dropbox SDK previously included a Mobile Safari link to sign up for those who don't have an account -- a definite no-no, since users could then choose to upgrade their account to one of the paid options without giving Apple their 30 percent from in-app purchases. The developers of Cambox quickly deployed the new Dropbox SDK, submitted it to Apple on Thursday and the update is already approved and available in the App Store. Crisis averted, folks -- nothing to see here.

iPhone: Crow iOS Review

iPhone
Crow iOS Review
May 11th 2012, 14:28

Of the couple hundred apps to cycle through my iPhone's home screen over the last few years, it's the "visual showpiece" titles that I've had the most trouble deleting. And that's not because I'm a bona fide Infinity Blade fanatic, nor am I a Rage HD die-hard. The truth of the matter is much simpler, and much… well, shallower: I treat many of those games like the app equivalents of fancy, hardcover coffee table books. They're incredibly attractive talking points, but I too rarely revisit them on my own time.

After clearing Sunside Games' Crow in a little over an hour, I felt like I'd just skimmed through a slick (if not particularly thick) coffee table book. An admittedly gorgeous game, Crow's lavishly detailed environments and haunting audio design earn it plenty of points in the presentation department, but it suffers from stale gameplay that never really gets off the ground.

Propelled by a muddled "there are Ancients among us" plot, the titular Crow is urged across barren, breathtaking environments by a malevolent voice. The actual gameplay is split into two too-similar segments—exploration and combat—that both see your crow flying across restrictive playing fields. The exploration overworlds have you soaring and surveying until you come across your next objective, where the combat portions are "on-rails tapping" missions, meaning you steer your feathered hero into collectibles and occasionally attack baddies with gesture-based Crow Magicks.

But the exploration is too limited to feel compelling, and the combat too repetitive to be fun. There are under-explained "moral choices" after each of the game's four boss battles, but their impacts are largely insignificant. Now, if you're looking for a showpiece app to impress friends and family with the visual power packed into your smartphone, Crow could very well be the "coffee table app" that you've been looking for. However, for everyone else, there are plenty of other bird-based iOS games that are worth your time.

The bottom line. It's gorgeous and haunting, but Crow is too rarely fun to recommend.
