Friday Recap: Airfoil App Store Removal, Seas0nPass, Apple Hearts Nest?
May 25th 2012, 21:18

Seas0nPassHey, the weekend is here! And for those of you in the United States, it's probably a three-day extravaganza, thanks to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday. Although we're not sure getting an extra day off work is really showing appreciation for those in the Armed Services who keep us safe, we'll take it where we can get it. The daily recap will be taking Monday off as well, so we'll see you back here on Tuesday -- in the meantime, enjoy the day's news for Friday, May 25, 2012!

Apple Speaks Out on Airfoil Speakers Touch App Store Removal

The iOS App Store is again under fire for yanking Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil Speaker Touch app, which has been comfortably sitting on its virtual shelves since 2009. According to The Verge, Apple has gone on record stating, "apps that use non-public APIs will be rejected" -- despite the developer's insistence on Thursday that they were in "full compliance" with App Store guidelines. It seems version 3.0 released last month introduced new "AirPlay receiver" functionality that ruffled Apple's feathers, despite initial speculation that the feature might duplicate something that the company plans to implement in iOS 6. Having tasted blood, Apple appears to be on the prowl for other apps that offer the same kind of AirPlay receiving functionality, so developers beware.

Seas0nPass Updated for Untethered Jailbreak on Apple TV 2

Following the introduction of Absinthe 2.0 this morning, FireCore LLC has announced the release of a new version of Seas0nPass, their excellent free Mac or Windows utility for jailbreaking the black Apple TV. The new version finally introduces an untethered jailbreak to version 5.0.1 (aka iOS 5.1.1) on the second-generation ATV, which works with all current plugins except for Overflow and Remote HD -- that includes our personal favorite, Plex. There's a tad bit of bad news for those rocking a third-generation Apple TV (that's the new one that offers 1080p playback): There's currently no jailbreak, tethered or untethered, for that device, although work continues on that front. For the rest of you, head to the Seas0nPass website and rock on.

Apple Stores May Soon Offer Nest Thermostat from iPod Creator

Now here's an interesting match made in heaven: According to iLounge, Apple retail stores may soon begin selling the Nest Learning Thermostat. In case you haven't been paying attention lately, the Nest is the latest project from founder and CEO Tony Fadell, the former senior vice president of Apple's iPod division. Still doesn't ring any bells? Fadell is the guy credited as the "father of the iPad," having first brought the idea to Apple, which secured his employment there. Nest recently expanded its presence from online-only sales to the Lowe's retail chain, and the intelligent thermostat (which features a companion iOS app) is expected to sell for $249, the same price as everywhere else.

GameFly Plans to Publish iOS, Android Mobile Games

Netflix may be rushing to put a stake in the DVD format, but the video game equivalent, GameFly, seems to be quite content with those optical discs. Or are they? The company announced their intentions this week "to begin publishing mobile games for the iOS and Android platforms, as well as launching the independent GameFly GameStore for Android later this fall." The service will be part of a game development fund the company has set aside "to work with mobile developers that are in the process of making a great game, but need the extra resources to publish and promote their titles." Clearly this is going to be a much bigger deal for those using Android devices, given that Apple isn't about to let GameFly come into the App Store and selling titles under their own shingle. But, it's an interesting move for the company as the game world shifts to digital distribution.

Former Apple Employee Claims Company is "Embarrassed by Siri"

We're not quite sure what to make of this one, but AppleInsider is reporting that Fortune writer Adam Lashinsky is making claims that Apple is "embarrassed by Siri," the virtual assistant technology introduced last fall with the iPhone 4S. According to a "former insider," Lashinsky writes that "Steve [Jobs] would have lost his mind over Siri," which has recently become a target of at least one lawsuit seeking class action status over how the service works (or doesn't, depending on who you ask). The report comes as Cupertino has started rolling out television commercials for Siri featuring celebrities ranging from Samuel L. Jackson to Zooey Deschanel and even John Malkovich. Ironically, the Samsung Galaxy S III finally arriving in stores next week completely apes Siri with a similar feature known as "S Voice," which The Verge found no better or worse than Siri herself.

iPhone: Free App Friday: Yahoo! TimeTraveler

iPhone
Free App Friday: Yahoo! TimeTraveler
May 25th 2012, 18:00

In an effort to maximize its relevancy in the mobile sphere, Yahoo! introduced a few new iOS apps this week to the App Store. One that particularly caught my eye was TimeTraveler, which allows you to explore the city you're in by creating easy-to-follow trip plans. The app creates the day's itinerary for you based on where you're starting from, where you want to end up, and how much time you have in between. You could also set your start location and destination at the same address to explore the sights around that area.

This isn't a new concept. Google Maps used to offer an opt-in Labs featured called "City Tours," which did exactly what TimeTraveler does. City Tours has since ceased to exist, but it looks like the Yahoo! TimeTraveler app is fueled by Google Maps, anyway.

One caveat: while using the app this morning, I found a bug. Since it uses location-based services, it looks like you actually have to be in the city you're exploring for the app to work properly. I had no problems setting up my itinerary in San Francisco--where I live--but when I tried to do so in London the app couldn't pinpoint where I was trying to go.

The app is only a few days old, but it features 29 cities around the world and the ability to share the itinerary with friends. It's not bad for a new app, and since it's free it's worth giving it a try.

NYT > iPhone: A Human Versus iPhone's Siri

NYT > iPhone

Updated: Jan. 25, 2012

In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone, which instantly became one of the most talked-about consumer products ever. Thousands of customers lined up to be the first to buy the phones, which featured computing and Wi-Fi capabilities, along with a crisp, computer-like display on an innovative touch screen. Rivals, including Google, rushed phones with similar features onto the market.

In October 2011, the company unveiled an eagerly awaited new version of the device, the iPhone 4S, that included a "virtual assistant," Siri, that recognized voice commands by users to schedule appointments, dictate text messages and conduct Web searches.

Although the new phone was virtually indistinguishable on the outside from its predecessor, the iPhone 4, it was packed with better technical innards, including a more advanced camera. The phone also included a more powerful chip known as the A5, the same microprocessor that acts as the brains inside the iPad.

Though many Apple fans expressed disappointment about the lack of a design change, consumers reacted very differently. Apple said it sold more than four million iPhone 4S's during the device's first weekend on sale.

In January 2012, after a blockbuster fourth quarter, Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said the iPhone 4S accounted for the majority of iPhone sales. This statement took on added significance considering that at the time, the iPhone 3GS was free with a two-year contract, and the iPhone 4 cost $100. Even in a down economy and with a free iPhone in its portfolio, Apple still managed to sell the expensive, newer 4S to most of its customers.

Yet the free and reduced-price iPhones were still important to the company's business. Tero Kuittinen, a senior analyst at MGI Research, said the free iPhone 3GS gave Apple the opportunity to expand aggressively into markets where smartphones were not as popular yet, like China and Africa.

Jan Dawson, an analyst with Ovum, said not to underestimate the power of the free iPhone 3GS and the cheaper iPhone 4. "You'd better believe the other iPhones are selling, too," he said. "They're suddenly competitive with the lower-end smartphones that you used to get if you couldn't afford an iPhone."

The iPhone4s runs on two kinds of cellphone networks, GSM and CDMA, allowing its operation worldwide. Prices start at $199 for a model with 16 gigabytes of storage. The new phone is available on the AT&T, Verizon and Sprint networks.

In a Race With Android

Apple's strategy helped narrow the lead that had been gained by Android phones, powered by Google's operating system. Nielsen, the audience measurement firm, reported that 61.6 percent of United States smartphone consumers surveyed in October 2011 said they had gotten an Android phone within the previous three months, while only 25.1 percent got an iPhone.

By December 2011, though, Android's lead among people who had recently acquired a smartphone had narrowed to 46.9 percent, while 44.5 percent of consumers said they had bought an iPhone, Nielsen said. About 57 percent of iPhone owners in December said they got the new iPhone 4S, while the rest, 43 percent, got older iPhones.

Legal Dispute

Soon after the iPhone 4S was introduced, Samsung Electronics said that it would seek to block its sale in France and Italy, asserting that the phone violated its patents. In seeking a court order against its rival in the two large European markets, Samsung indicated a more aggressive stance in its expanding patent battle with Apple.

Samsung said that it planned to file for preliminary injunctions in other countries after further review. The two companies are locked in about 20 legal disputes over patents in nine countries, including Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States.

The fight began when Apple sued Samsung in April 2011 in the United States, asserting that the Samsung Galaxy lineup of smartphones and tablet devices "slavishly" copied the design, user interface and packaging of the iPhone and iPad. Samsung responded with its own lawsuits accusing Apple of violating its intellectual property.

An Issue of Control

Apple likes to maintain tight control over what programs can appear on the iPhone — a task that became a little bit harder in July 2010, when the Library of Congress, which has the power to define exceptions to an important copyright law, said that it was legal to bypass a phone's controls on what software it will run to get "lawfully obtained" programs to work.

The issue has been a topic of debate between Apple, which says it has the right to control the software on its devices, and technically adept users who want to customize their phones as they see fit.

Apple has also said that altering the phones encouraged the pirating of applications, exposed iPhones to security risks and taxed the company's customer support staff. But iPhone hobbyists say they simply want to have free range to use certain features and programs on their phones that Apple has limited or failed to offer.

Can Apple win in an intensely competitive market against rivals that are openly licensing their software to scores of companies? It faces that challenge not only in phones, but also in the market for tablet computers, where the iPad is about to take on a similar set of rivals.

The stakes are huge, as the mobile computing market could prove to be larger than the PC market ever was.

That leaves little room for error at Apple. The company must continue to create hit products, as a single misstep could give Android and other rivals an opportunity to make inroads and steal market share.
