An iPad stylus is like a little umbrella in your piña colada. You don't need one. But it's a nice extra.
So much more sophisticated than finger painting.
The Nomad Compose is different from every other stylus I've tried in that it doesn't mimic the feel of a pen or a pencil, but rather a paintbrush--it has real bristles, blending natural and synthetic fibers. I tested the Dual Tip Long version, which has a 0.7-inch brush tip on one end, and a much shorter 0.05-inch "glide bevel tip" on the other. The bevel tip is made of the same brush material, but its beveled shape mimics the feel of classic styluses you may be used to. It works for drawing lines as well as tapping buttons in iOS apps.
The longer bristles on the brush end generally don't spread out far enough to invoke a Multi-Touch reaction, unless you really mash them all the way down. The touchscreen tends to see all the bristles as one input, the same as a regular stylus, and you can even press buttons with the brush tip although it feels "mushier" than using your finger or the shorter bevel tip.
The bottom line. So if the brush doesn't paint like a brush...why use a brush? For me, it was a mental thing. Like how the little drink umbrella makes the piña colada seem sweeter, the Nomad Compose made me feel more like I was painting. Other styluses give you similar lines, but they feel more like pencils or pens you might pick up for a quick sketch or doodle. Whereas, at least in my mind, I would only bust out the paintbrush--or in the case of the iPad, the Nomad Compose--if I were actually going to paint.
