The iPhone 5's coming! Eventually! While Apple hasn't provided any details as to the dimensions, aesthetics or abilities of the latest iteration of the handset, There's a lot of media outlets -- some well informed, others not so much -- that swear they have a handle on what's going on. Here's some of the best takes on what Cupertino might be cooking up for us.
The Thinnest Phone in the World

KGI Securities believe that the iPhone 5 could very well be the most svelte phone that Apple's brought to market yet. According to AppleInsider, the Taiwan-based financial services group believes that thanks to Apple's rumoured decision to use in-cell display panels, the company will be able to reduce both the size and the weight of its next generation smartphone handset. The use of an in-cell display would embed the phone's layer of touch screen sensors within the display itself, reducing the overall thickness of the iPhone by a total of .44 millimetres. And what exactly is in-cell display technology? Mac|Life's Michael Simon explains it all right here.
Bigger Battery, Better Life

Meanwhile, over at GigaOM, Kevin C. Tofel believes that even with the addition of in-cell display technology, the next iPhone won't be getting any smaller -- but it will wind up with a larger internal battery. Tofel argues that just because other smartphone manufacturers are working to make thinner phones doesn't mean Apple has to. The company has always made its design decisions on what its designers felt was best, not according to the prevalent trends of the day, which is what a lot of other third-party handset makers do (Like Samsung and HTC). Instead of changing the dimensions of the iPhone, Tofel believes that Apple could use the smartphone's new found space to accommodate a larger battery to compensate for the additional power drain caused by LTE communications and a beefier internal processor.
Heavy Metal Glass

Big, small, or the same size, the next iPhone is gonna need a body. If you were to ask Lewis Page at The Register, he'll tell you that the next iPhone's body will be made from metallic glass: a super tough substance that's been around in one form or another since the 1960s. Metallic glass has traditionally been prohibitively expensive to produce -- until now. Thanks to new production methods, the material can now be injection molded into most any shape -- just like plastic, but 20 times stronger.
iPhone Nano

Size isn't everything, but you wouldn't know it from the way that everyone's talking about how big or small the iPhone 5 will be. According to China Times via Boy Genius Report, there's an excellent possibility that Apple along with the iPhone 5, we may also see an iPhone Nano brought to market later this year. China Times claims that Apple's current discount handset, the iPhone 3GS, is still priced too high to compete with the bargain basement prices of most entry level Android smartphones. As such, Apple will inject a new, cheap as dirt entry level offering into their product line in order to capture the hearts, minds and wallets of frugal shoppers.
