Billed as "smart calling for your smartphone," a new iOS and Android app called Sidecar.me debuted on Tuesday offers "a completely new communication experience" including free calls anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.
Sidecar Communications, Inc. has announced the availability of their free Sidecar.me app for the iPhone and iPod touch on Tuesday (the app is also available for Android). The app promises to bring "smart calling" that lets users share amazing live "see what I see" video, brilliant photos and locations, all while talking on a call.
"Call any number in the U.S. or Canada for free over Wi-Fi: The person you're calling doesn't need to have the app," the app description explains. "When you call, they'll receive a text message telling them how to download Sidecar so next time you can use Sidecar's exclusive smart calling features."
Sidecar users can also call anywhere in the world for free as long as both callers are using the Sidecar app, with no restrictions on how long they talk.
The real magic comes with the app's ability to share with the caller on the other end. "See What I See" allows users to share amazing real-time videos of what's happening around them, all while a call is active. Sidecar users can also snap photos or even share photos from your device library.
Last but not least, the Sidecar app lets users share their location, making it handy to meet up with other users, or even send contact information between address books. During a call, users can also share text messages to keep information just between them.
Sidecar.me is now available as a free 10.6MB download from the App Store; the app is compatible with all devices running iOS 5.0 or later which includes camera-equipped iPads, but the app is not universal so there's no native support for the tablet.
