LostWinds 2: Winter of the Melodias sounds like it could be a Pixar film: using the power of the wind, a boy goes on a quest to find his missing mother in a faraway land. Exploration and puzzle-solving make innovative use of that wind, letting you move a finger across the touchscreen to "draw" the path of a gust, which the young protagonist Toku can use to jump, move objects, or otherwise interact with his environment, to name a few abilities.

In this sequel to the previous iOS and Wii favorite, the realm Toku navigates is a frozen one, and as such, combining environmental effects and wind make up most of the cerebrally-oriented challenges you'll encounter while uncovering the game world. Starting out, you might create a snowball by combining a wind vortex with snowfall, subsequently flinging it into some fragile hanging icicles blocking your path forward. But barriers to entry inevitably get more complicated.

Pairing fire from mountainside torches with wind melts ice and burns through wood, and watching as a blazing trail follows your drawn wind path is quite a sight; meanwhile, torches are often blocked off by stone doors, which in turn can generally only be opened by solving puzzles involving weighted panels and objects like stones. Where things get really interesting is when you're given some control over seasons, bringing rainfall, water manipulation, and (to a slight degree) weather into the mix in some creative ways.

You can also use wind to fight monsters, but interestingly, combat can mostly be ignored until the last boss; and the touch controls can be a little fussy in battle, anyway. LostWinds 2 never becomes overly challenging, either mentally or in its game-y elements. Still, with its rich mythic aesthetic and innovative design, it's a world you'll want to stay in -- for as long as it lasts.

The bottom line. Despite easy difficulty, LostWinds 2 is a gorgeous journey that is easily worth recommending.
