From rumor to fact, just like that: The Nest Learning Thermostat has arrived at Apple Stores -- including the company's online store -- just a day after the $249 device makes the trek up to Canada.
Leave it to "the father of the iPod," Tony Fadell, to finally disrupt the thermostat business, which has remained mostly unchanged for decades. Now, the former Apple executive has apparently called in a favor with his former employer, because his new company's $249 Nest Learning Thermostat is available for sale both in Apple's retail stores as well as its online store.
Coupled with a free iOS app from the App Store, the Nest Learning Thermostat is a model of simplicity that would make Steve Jobs proud. Simply install it and then turn it up or down as needed, and the Nest intelligently learns your schedule and even turns itself down automatically when no one is home.
First available only from the Nest website, the company landed a plum retail deal with the Lowe's home improvement chain prior to landing on Apple's shelves, where it sells for the same $249 as everywhere else.
It's been a busy week for Nest, having packed its bags and headed to Canada on Tuesday, where the thermostat is also finally available just in time for air conditioning season. The company is also looking to expand to Europe in the future as well.
