iPhone: Snapguide Review

Snapguide Review

There's no shortage of people looking for new ways to tell other people how to do things on the Internet, but usually these tutorials are better seen than read. That's where Snapguide comes in. The free iPhone and iPod touch app makes it easy to teach or learn skills, tricks, or tips.

Its core approach is simple: Just take pictures or videos of whatever needs to be shown, and then write captions to create slideshow tutorials for anything from baking Marshmallow Cupcakes (which looked delicious) to teaching a dog to play peekaboo (an actual featured Snapguide at the time of this writing). Viewing different guides is as easy and accessible as can be, and teach relatively complicated skills better than pure text ever could.

It's a simple concept executed extremely well, and besides hitting the occasional freeze or crash, there were few roadblocks in-between thinking of something and making a guide for it. Snapping pictures, capturing videos, and writing text is all handled within the app, and luckily in such a way that just about anyone should be able to make a guide without any problem. However, some elements of the interface aren't exactly as intuitive as others -- such as the bottom tab that's used to pull up necessary supplies for the task -- but it's hardly a deal-breaker.

Snapguide's real strength is in sharing guides. Instead of being held hostage inside of the app, Snapguides are posted to the web, making them perfect for spreading via Twitter, Facebook, or via email. This should make confused phone calls from technophobic family members a breeze; just make a Snapguide explaining how to fix the problem, email it over, and presto: issue solved. Hopefully.

The bottom line. Snapguide's near-infinite uses make it great for learning new things, and even better for spreading helpful information.
