As you may know, jailbreaking is the best way to "hack" your iPhone or iPad to get the features and apps you want that Apple and the App Store won't provide. The latest jailbreak tool to hit the streets is called Absinthe 2.0 and it allows any iOS 5.1.1 device to be jailbroken, including the latest iPad. Read on to find out how to take the plunge and easily jailbreak your iOS device.

What You'll Need:

>> Absinthe 2.0 Jailbreak Tool
>> iOS 5.1.1 device

Why Jailbreak?

Jailbreaking gives your device the ability to run applications not usually allowed by Apple in the iTunes Stores. With a jailbroken device, you can also install a myriad of custom themes and other Apple-banned tweaks and exetnsions for iOS.

1. Back Up Your Device

Always back up your device before you decide to take a leap and do something new. It's very easy--plug in your device and launch iTunes. Right-click on the device in the Devices list in the left-hand sidebar and select the "Back Up" option. After your device syncs and the backup is completed, you can begin the ever-easier process of jailbreaking.

2. Download Absinthe 2.0

The newest jailbreak, Absinthe 2.0, allows you to jailbreak a myriad of devices, including:

- All generations of the iPad
- iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S
- iPod touch 3rd generation, iPod touch 4th generation

One you decide which device will do the deed, make sure that you've updated iOS to 5.1.1. Again, this jailbreak will only work with iOS 5.1.1.

When you are ready, you can download the Absinthe 2.0 application for Mac, Windows, and Linux from the greenpois0n website.

3. Let the Jailbreaking Begin

Once downloaded, launch the application. It will search for a connected device running iOS 5.1.1. Once your device has been detected, the "Jailbreak" button will become available. Click it to begin.

After connecting the device, the jailbreak process will begin. You will notice that your device restarts after the application sends the "final jailbreak data." During the restart phase, you will see the Apple logo and progress bar displayed on the device screen.

Once you see the "Done, enjoy!" text in the Absinthe application, the jailbreak process will be completed.

4. Launch Cydia, Rejoice

The heart and soul of the jailbreaking community is Cydia, the open App Store that is free from the regime that is the iTunes App Store. Launch Cydia to prepare the iOS device filesystem so that it can install jailbroken applications.

Cydia will restart when this process is completed, allowing you to relaunch and install as many jailbroken applications as you desire. After a relaunch, Cydia will ask you to specify the type of user you are. The options are User, Hacker, and Developer. User has access to apps, tweaks, and themes; hacker has access to command line tools in addition; and, developer has access to everything, including "even scary internal stuff."
