The announcement Thursday that Cricket Wireless had landed a plum deal as Apple's sole prepaid carrier in the United States is now leading to speculation that it could be the first of many, with Boost Mobile fingered as next in line.
TechnoBuffalo is reporting that Cricket Wireless won't be alone in offering the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S with prepaid plans here in the U.S. -- come September, Boost Mobile may also join the club.
"A trusted source has advised that the prepaid carrier will introduce both the iPhone 4 and 4S in early September," the report reveals. "It remains uncertain if the Sprint-powered MVNO will offer its popular $50 Month Unlimited plan with Shrinkage, which includes unlimited talk, text and web, which also rewards customers who pay their bill on time by reducing their monthly bill by $5 down to as low as $35 per month."
On Thursday, Cricket Wireless announced a deal with Apple that offered an 8GB iPhone 4 for $399.99 or 16GB iPhone 4S for $499.99 with a no-contract, prepaid $55 per month package that includes unlimited talk, text and data.
Aside from the up-front cost of the device, the only real "gotcha" with this deal is the data is throttled after 2.3GB, but otherwise Cricket is offering an extremely competitive alternative to the post-paid plans offered by AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint.
The only curious part of the Boost Mobile rumor is, why would Apple wait until September to launch on the carrier? By then, Cupertino will be within a month or so of the next iPhone, although it's likely to keep the older handsets selling for users who want less expensive options.
